Hormonal imbalances in women are becoming more and more common. This can be due to stressful lifestyles, irregular eating patterns, high consumption of sugar, stimulants and alcohol as well as exposure to chemical oestrogen compounds in cosmetics and food and drinks packaging. All these factors can have a cascade effect on adrenaline and cortisol levels (the stress hormones) which has a knock-on effect on our female hormones that can easily become out-of-sync.
Having a hormonal imbalance is so commonplace these days that some women accept the monthly struggle they go through. Symptoms can include fatigue, mood swings, cravings, acne breakouts, depression and weight gain. In more severe cases, a hormonal imbalance can lead to conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, fibroids, fertility problems and pesky symptoms associated with going through the menopause. You don’t however need to suffer in silence as there is so much that can be done through diet and lifestyle to minimise these symptoms.
As well as helping women to balance their hormones, I work with couples preconceptually to enhance fertility through diet, supplementation and lifestyle changes. I also offer prenatal nutrition advice and work with women post-natally to help maximise energy levels in the early days of having a baby (and not much sleep!) as well as advising parents on weaning from 6 months onwards.
